Electrical Installation for Solar Panels Manchester

Every solar panel installation depends on safe, compliant electrical work to connect the panels on your roof to the inverter, consumer unit and national grid. This is not a job for a general electrician. Solar PV systems involve both DC wiring from the panels and AC wiring from the inverter, each with different safety requirements, cable specifications and testing protocols under BS 7671 and MCS standards. Poorly executed electrical work is the single most common reason solar installations fail inspection or underperform.

Manchester Renewables provides complete electrical installation services for solar PV systems across Greater Manchester. Our NIC/EIC Approved electricians handle everything from DC string wiring and inverter connection through to consumer unit integration, generation meter fitting and G98/G99 grid connection applications. Whether you are installing a 3kW domestic system or a 50kW commercial array, we deliver every electrical element to MCS technical standards with full certification.

Electrical Installation for Solar Panels Manchester — What's Included

DC Wiring & String Installation

MC4 connector wiring from solar panels to the inverter, routed through UV-resistant conduit with correct cable sizing for string voltage and current. All DC isolators fitted to MCS standards.

Inverter Connection & Commissioning

Professional mounting, wiring and commissioning of string or hybrid inverters. We configure monitoring systems, set export limits where required, and verify MPPT tracking is optimised.

Consumer Unit Integration

Dedicated circuit installation from inverter to consumer unit with RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection device. If your existing board cannot accommodate the new circuit, we include the upgrade.

Generation Meter & G98/G99 Application

Fitting of MCS-compliant generation meters for Smart Export Guarantee eligibility. We handle all G98 (under 16A per phase) or G99 (larger systems) applications to your Distribution Network Operator.

Testing, Certification & Notification

Full testing of all DC and AC circuits with calibrated instruments. Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) issued and Building Control notified automatically through our NIC/EIC registration.

UK Government Scheme

BS 7671 18th Edition & MCS Technical Standards: Mandatory for all solar PV electrical installations

All solar PV electrical work must comply with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition) and MCS Technical Standard MIS 3002. These standards cover DC and AC circuit design, cable sizing, protective device selection, earthing arrangements and testing requirements. Non-compliant installations cannot be MCS-certified, which means the homeowner loses eligibility for the Smart Export Guarantee and may invalidate their home insurance. Our NIC/EIC registration means every installation meets these requirements.

Why Electrical Installation for Solar Panels Manchester Matters

  • Incorrect DC wiring can create arc faults that pose a serious fire risk inside your roof space
  • Undersized cables cause voltage drop that reduces your solar system output by 5-15%
  • Without proper G98/G99 notification, your DNO can disconnect your system from the grid
  • MCS certification — required for Smart Export Guarantee — depends on compliant electrical installation

Cost Guidance

Electrical installation for a standard 3-4kW domestic solar PV system typically costs between £400 and £800 when carried out as part of a full solar installation. For retrofit electrical work on existing systems or standalone electrical upgrades, costs range from £600 to £1,200 depending on complexity, cable runs and whether a consumer unit upgrade is required. Commercial systems with longer cable runs and 3-phase connections start from around £1,500. All prices include full certification and Building Control notification.

Electrical Installation for Solar Panels Manchester — Common Questions

Can I use my existing electrician to wire up solar panels?
Technically, any Part P-registered electrician can carry out domestic electrical work. However, solar PV involves specialist DC wiring, MC4 connectors, string calculations and MCS-specific requirements that most general electricians have no experience with. If the electrical work is not completed to MCS standards, your installation cannot be certified, and you will lose access to the Smart Export Guarantee. We strongly recommend using electricians with specific solar PV training and MCS accreditation.
What is a G98 application and do I need one?
A G98 application (formerly G83) notifies your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) that you are connecting a generation source to the grid. It is legally required for all grid-connected solar PV systems under 16A per phase (approximately 3.68kW single-phase). Systems above this threshold require a G99 application, which involves a more detailed assessment. We handle all DNO applications as part of our standard service.
How long does the electrical installation take for a domestic solar system?
For a standard domestic solar PV installation of 10-16 panels, the electrical work typically takes one day. This includes DC wiring from roof to inverter, inverter mounting and connection, consumer unit integration, generation meter fitting and full testing. More complex installations with battery storage, longer cable runs or consumer unit upgrades may take an additional half day.
Do I need surge protection for solar panels?
BS 7671 18th Edition Amendment 2 requires a risk assessment for surge protection on all new installations. For solar PV systems, a Type 2 surge protection device (SPD) is almost always recommended and is an MCS requirement. SPDs protect your inverter and panels from voltage spikes caused by lightning or grid switching events. We fit Type 2 SPDs as standard on every solar installation.
